Along the Marin County coast, where the Pacific fog rolls in over the headlands and the hillsides blaze with wildflowers in summer, Kathryn Cirincione spotted the Leopard Lily — Lilium pardalinum — its spotted, recurved petals nodding on arching stems like small lanterns in the wind. She brought it back to the studio not as a specimen to be catalogued, but as a presence to be felt. The watercolor that followed is less a portrait than a memory: blooms scattered freely across a cool, misty ground, some fully open and trembling with stamens, others still furled in bud, drifting at the edges like thoughts not yet spoken. There is something of the ancient in this image — the flat, devotional quality of the Italian church art in Cirincione's blood, where each flower was once a symbol, each color a prayer. Yet the hand is utterly contemporary, loose and joyful, the ink line sketching without apology, the watercolor bleeding softly into itself. The inscription at the bottom — Leopard Lily / Lilium pardalinum — grounds the reverie in the specific, the scientific, the named world, as if to say: this beautiful, fleeting thing is real, and it lives here, and it matters. This archival inkjet print, faithfully rendered from the original watercolor, carries all of that tenderness into your hands — a limited edition of 25, signed by the artist, a small window onto the wild California coast and the long lineage of art-making that runs through Cirincione's work.
