The California grizzly bear has been extinct since 1922, yet it still roars from the state's flag — a ghost of wildness, a symbol of a republic that declared itself free. In Kathryn Cirincione's hands, that bear is caged. Iron bars divide the image into vertical rhythms, and the animal presses against them with an almost human urgency. A red star floats above, untethered and sharp-pointed, as if it has broken loose from the flag itself. Below, in looping cursive, the words 'California Republic' unspool like a signature on a document whose promises are still being debated. Cirincione made this work the way she makes all her work — absorbing the daily news, the current tensions around land, freedom, state power and identity, and letting the tools lead. The solar etching process pulls imagery from light itself, and the handwork she adds after printing carries the intimacy of the studio, of a human hand insisting on presence. Growing up in a family of Italian church muralists, she learned that images carry weight beyond decoration; here, that inheritance meets the California she has called home on the Marin coast. The red stripe at the bottom is the stripe from the Bear Republic flag, laid flat, almost like a wound or a horizon. The bear stands on a sliver of green — the only color that speaks of living earth. Everything else is the tension between black-and-white fact and red urgency. The viewer is left to decide: is the republic the cage, or is something else?
