Pilate stepped onto the balcony and said to the crowd: *Behold the man.* Two thousand years later, Kathryn Cirincione steps into her Bolinas studio, absorbs the morning news, picks up her tools — and asks us to behold again. In *Ecce Homo*, she places a Black man restrained in an electric chair at the very heart of a centuries-old painted Christ, his crown of thorns a halo of violence above both figures, the crimson drape of martyrdom flowing beneath them both. The question she poses is not rhetorical: Who do we sacrifice? Who do we call holy only after the fact? Cirincione comes from a family of church muralists and stained glass artists in Southern Italy — people who painted suffering and transcendence into stone walls so that ordinary people could look up and feel seen by something larger. She carries that inheritance into a world of lynching photographs, execution chambers, and systemic racial injustice. The grainy black-and-white documentary image of the condemned man does not diminish the sacred painting behind him — it consecrates it, and indicts it simultaneously. White-gloved attendants lean in at either side, as Roman soldiers once did, administering the machinery of the state. This print does what the greatest art has always done: it holds two unbearable truths in the same frame and refuses to resolve the tension. It asks us to sit with it — with the weight of history, the persistence of cruelty, and the stubborn, aching human need to find meaning in suffering. *Ecce Homo* is not a comfortable work. It is a necessary one.
